Roehampton

This contemporary, new build development was completed by Lab Architects in 2019. In an area of already diverse residential stock, soon to be transformed by the Alton Area Regeneration Plan, our design principles for this scheme were based on considerations of how we can continue the innovative approach to designing modern living spaces in Roehampton.

The site had previously been part of the neighbouring primary school and known as the old school keeper’s house, however, no longer being required by the school, plans were approved to demolish the existing building and sensitively develop a row of three terraced houses comprising six duplex flats in total. The new development offers the benefit of loft living or garden living to residents, with the accessible ground floor apartments addressing the garden, while the flats above benefit from a dramatic double height living space and their own private entrance at ground floor.

A simple pallet of materials was used for the main facades; a delicate layering of kebony cladding and breise soleil over a mortar-less brickwork comprised of dark, mixed greys, contrasted against a white silicone render. Inside, the timber detailing continues across a grey oak flooring and plywood wardrobe doors. Along with the dual pitched roofs and the timber weathering to a silver-grey patina, the result is reminiscent of alpine dwellings, and was described by Faye Greenslade in the Evening Standard as ‘light and airy as a ski chalet’.
