Garden Corner
Grade II * Listed Garden Corner, is a seven-storey red brick property located on Chelsea Embankment. Between 1906/07 the house was completely remodelled by C F A Voysey, England’s most highly regarded Arts and Craft architect. At the time this project was celebrated as one of his finest interiors.
Voysey re-proportioned the principal rooms, including the first-floor drawing room where he introduced a new barrel-vaulted ceiling to ‘increase the restful proportions of the room’ and give the impression of a lower ceiling. A substantial portion of the house was lined with Austrian White Oak panelling and built-in oak joinery ‘left quite clean from the plane, without stain, polish or varnish’.
Since 1907 Garden Corner has had a chequered history. Over time the house was used as a social and cultural centre and architectural offices before it was returned to its original use as a single-family dwelling in 1995. During that period some of Voysey’s features have been lost.
Our brief was to undertake detailed research to identify and preserve the original Voysey elements remove the inappropriate alterations and additions undertaken over time, and sensitively remodel the interiors, together with the client, to create a comfortable and elegant family home.
