Tregunter House
Within the Boltons Conservation Area, characterised by striking 19th-century white stucco-fronted facades, our third project on Tregunter Road involved the full refurbishment of the house and the creation of a new basement extending beneath the full footprint of the garden. A generous wellness suite is seamlessly integrated into the daily life of the townhouse, incorporating a spa, sauna, gym, wine storage and cinema. To avoid a sense of being subterranean, we designed a sculptural spiral stair to the rear of the cinema, drawing movement upwards towards the yoga room, with views across the garden to the rear of the house. The six-metre window had to be craned over the house, flooding the lobby with natural light, dispelling any sense of being underground and connecting the extended kitchen with the garden on the lower ground floor. Above ground, a sensitive rear extension references the roundel window detail familiar locally, housing a garden-facing study on the ground floor and a new dressing room within the principal suite on the first floor. Throughout, a tactile natural palette creates warmth and continuity between the original house and the new spaces below.
